Step 1: Locate an orthodontist in your area. Ask around. Ask your friends, work colleagues, your dentist, etc, to be sure you are not only focusing on finding the “cheapest” orthodontist, but also one that is trusted and does good work.

Step 2: Once you’ve determined which orthodontist you will be using you’ll want to schedule a consultation. Find out what is really needed. How extensive is your case? Will it be cheaper to fix it now or wait further down the road? It is normally cheaper to fix the problem as it is occurring unless it is in a young child and their teeth are still coming in. Ask if he/she is sure that braces will work and if you can’t do something else. Determine which type of braces are in your price range. You don’t have to go with the most expensive ones just because those are the “in” thing.

Types of braces you may be looking at getting may be metal, invisalign, clear braces or incognito/hidden braces. Metal braces are a small, metal bracket that is appropriately placed on each tooth by the orthodontist, then straightened with a wire. Invisilign is basically invisible to most people, it’s a clear plastic aligner that fits firmly to your teeth and helps straighten them. Clear braces are the same idea as metal braces; however, they are clear which makes them hard to see by someone walking by (but not as expensive as Invisalign). Your teen may actually want the clear braces just because they are harder to see and a bit more comfortable then the metal braces would be. Incognito braces are completely undistinguishable by others. They are brackets that are placed on the back of your teeth, then straightened with a wire. They are 100% customized.

Step 3: Decide which braces you will want to get based upon your budget. Remember, there are different options for a reason, find one that is affordable for you. Get the one that will feel comfortable and you would be willing to take care of.

Step 4: Find out if the orthodontist has any deals. Ask him/her if they do a monthly payment plan, or full payment. Find out if they’ll work with your budget. Most offices will work with your budget as long as they see that you are willing to pay it.
